Animals
Animals are important companions for witches and wizards. Why else would first years be encouraged to bring one? The question is, what to bring? Supposedly cats, owls, or toads are allowed. Well, Ron Weasley changed that when he brought a rat, so those are allowed too I guess.
Hydrangea asked a good question – what’s the best animal to bring?
Well, for me the best animal was a frog. I’ve felt a connection to frogs ever since I was a tiny little witch. Some people have real cat connections, especially knitters – I’m not a huge fan of them myself and know many magical knitters who are the same, but for the most part knitters are considered cat witches. Others have an affinity toward owls. I guess it mostly depends on how you feel about any of the animals in question.
If, however, you feel nothing toward any of the allowed animals, there is still hope! Perhaps there is another animal you feel strongly about – maybe your parents could write Hogwarts requesting that you be allowed to bring it with you. Perhaps there are no animals you feel strongly about. If that is the case, consider what animal would be most practical for you to have: an owl. Imagine never having to use school owls to send letters or packages; imagine forming a bond with your owl that only strengthens over time.
In short, to find your perfect match you need to look within yourself. You’ll probably find a little animal in there looking for its real-life companion.

I wish I could bring one of my 2 cats… but my sisters would certainly lose their tempers if I did! I do love my owl though! He makes a useful and friendly companion!

I would bring my lovely cockatiel, Lupin to Hogwarts, if I could.
However, I’d be ever so crushed if disaster were to befall her whilist she was there, so she’s spending some time with her Auntie Lori while I’m here for the summer months.
Otherwise, I don’t know what I’d get! A cat is totally out of the question, and an owl would make Lupin jealous. ^_^; A frog… well that might make her sick. Hmm…. perhaps a hermit crab? Or a fighting fish? XD A ‘Claw with a magic fighting fish… oh, that’s rather funny.

Oh, I rather like the idea of a fighting fish! Perhaps one could enchant a vessel and carry him around one’s neck on a chain.
As long as you don’t think it would disrupt your frog, roommate, I think I am going to go with an owl. My father has been sending me so many messages lately it seems quite practical to have an owl of my own rather than to keep using the school ones. I’ll see what Da thinks.

Oooh! I like the idea of wearing a fighting fish around my neck! That’s such a cool idea, ‘drangea! I might just do that. I might have to get the headmistress’ permission first though. (:
So, I doubt I’ll be getting a frog. A fish is much easier to take care of! ^_^
I’m sure since your Da writes to you so much, he wouldn’t be opposed to getting you an owl. (:
